Your Monday morning catch-up on Sunday’s big games in Europe.
Gomez scores from halfway as Brighton thump Palace
Brighton beat Crystal Palace 5-0 at the Amex, and one goal stood out. In the seventh minute, Diego Gomez won the ball and spotted Walter Benitez off his line. He then lobbed him from roughly 50 metres, and people are already comparing it to David Beckham’s famous goal from 1996. Palace had already scored an own goal before that, and Yasin Ayari, Charalampos Kostoulas and Jack Hinshelwood added the rest. Brighton are third and have scored the most goals in the league.
Madueke’s late goal gives Arsenal the points
Arsenal had 74% of the ball at the City Ground, but it took until the 80th minute to break Forest down. Declan Rice set up Noni Madueke, who finished well for a 1-0 win. Gabriel was outstanding at the back. United drop more points at Leeds
Bryan Mbeumo gave Manchester United the lead in the 35th minute, finishing a Youri Tielemans cross. Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised for Leeds from a corner six minutes after half-time. United have won only one of their first seven league games and haven’t won in the league since August, so the pressure on Michael Carrick is growing. First league win of the season for Bournemouth
Marcus Tavernier scored in the sixth minute and Evanilson added a second just after the break, as Bournemouth beat Sunderland 2-0 for their first league win of the season. Sunderland stay in the bottom three.
Mbappe shines as Madrid beat Sevilla 4-1
Arda Guler opened the scoring with a strike into the top corner. Kylian Mbappe then scored a solo goal and a Panenka penalty, and Yan Diomande got the fourth. Manu Bueno scored a late consolation for Sevilla. Madrid play Barcelona away in El Clásico next Sunday, 25 October. Lazio stun Juventus as Milan edge Atalanta
Lazio won 3-0 in Turin through goals from Oliver Provstgaard, Gustav Isaksen and substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. It was their first Serie A win there since 2017, and it moves them level with Inter at the top. Milan held on to beat Atalanta 3-2, even though they missed a penalty.
Rugby League World Cup: a big weekend ahead
The World Cup takes a breather today, but there’s plenty to look forward to. On Saturday 24 October, the Jillaroos play England in Perth. On Sunday 25 October, the Kangaroos take on Fiji in Brisbane.
